Rollers GU meet tonight
18 Feb 2014
Township Rollers welcome their city rivals, Gaborone United in the second leg of the Mascom Top 8 tonight (February 19) at the National Stadium.
Rollers go into the match leading their rivals with a 2-1 win from the first leg. The two had previously met in the same competition last year where Gaborone United beat Rollers 6-3 on aggregate in the semi-finals.
Gaborone United will be looking forward to turning the tables around in order to defend a title they won last year. Moyagolele was recently eliminated from the CAF confederations cup by Supersport United therefore, being knocked out of two cups within a space of a week is something they would not afford.
GU will be led from the bench by George Mogopodi after the head coach, David Bright was suspended on February 16. Gaborone United has to win by two goals to nil in order to overturn the deficit. GU secretary general, Herbert Letsebe said the mood in the GU camp was high.
“The players are looking forward to this game, they want to put the club first before everything” he said. He said Bright’s suspension had not affected the team. He emphasised that all the players would be available for selection except for the injured Edwin Olerile. He said they were expecting Thulani Moyo to boost the defence.
However, Rollers who are the current log leaders, and will be buoyed by their impressive form this season. Their job is half done and they need a draw to book a place in the final.
They have the duo of Sekhana Koko and Jerome Louis who helped the team reach the semi-final after dismantling Magosi in the first round. Rollers have won the competition before and they will be driven by the fact that they have not lost any game this year.
Both teams are firmly in contention for the be Mobile title with Rollers leading the log with just four points above GU who are in fourth position. Mapalastina and Moyagoleele are the only teams who have won this tournament since its inception in the 2011/2012 season. The winner of this tie will face BDF XI in the final.
The game is scheduled to start at 7pm. ENDS
