DRTS introduces online payment method

17 Dec 2025

The Department of Road Transport Services (DRTS) has no plans to establish vehicle registration and licensing office at Letlhakeng due to lack of resources.
This was said by Assistant Minster of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Keoagile Atamelang, when responding to a question in Parliament that despite lack of DRTS office in Letlhakeng, the service to renew licenses was rendered through Botswana Post office in the village. In addition and in pursuit of customer convenience, the department has introduced an online platform *174# which customers can use to pay for the renewal of road licenses.
Mr Atamelang said the ministry recognised the contribution of farmers to the country’s food security. In that regard, Mr Atamelang said some incentives already extended to farmers by government was that tractors imported into the country were zero rated and not required to pay Value Added Tax at the ports of entry.
“On a similar case, government has exempted tractor drivers from holding tractor driving license in the farm or any other road other than public road. These are among others, the efforts of government to assist farmers to produce food,” he said.
MP for Letlhakeng, Brig. Domcaza Mokgwathi had wanted to know if the ministry was aware of the difficulties of Letlhakeng residents when there was need to pay road tax for their mobile equipment.
He wanted to know the plans in place to establish DRTS office in Letlhakeng District as well as understand if it would not be in the interest of the ministry to exempt farming equipment and implements from the payment of annual road tax as an incentive to farmers who contributed to food security.
