Govt Secures Insurance For Lemang Dijo
25 Nov 2025
The government has secured insurance coverage for farmers under the Lemang Dijo programme through Cluster Development Groups (CDGs), Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Dr Edwin Dikoloti, has said.
Speaking during a press briefing in Gaborone on Monday, Dr Dikoloti said the insurance arrangement would safeguard farmer investments by reducing production risks and supporting household food security.
He explained that the insurance would cushion farmers against drought and other natural disasters, ensuring continuity and stability within the programme.
Dr Dikoloti highlighted that the Lemang Dijo model promotes optimal use of resources, protects government investments and aligns with Botswana’s vision of a self-reliant, technology-driven agricultural sector.
As part of the programme, government will also procure seeds for micro-scale farmers, encouraging the use of open-pollinated varieties (OPV).
These seed varieties are affordable, sustainable and allow farmers to save, reuse and exchange seeds, helping reduce production costs and strengthen community seed security.
OPVs also help preserve biodiversity and protect indigenous genetic resources.
He further said limiting subsidised production to one hectare was necessary to maintain manageable production levels and improve productivity.
Business Botswana Agriculture Sector Chairperson, Mr Boiki Tema, stressed the need for the agricultural sector to contribute six percent of the national GDP.
He said identifying structural gaps within the programme and addressing them during reviews would strengthen performance.
Mr Tema also raised concerns about fraud and abuse within the sector, noting that such issues divert funds away from productive initiatives. ENDS
