Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Major General (Rtd) Pius Mokgware says the ministry is committed to customer centric delivery services.
Responding to a question in Parliament from Member of Parliament for Molepolole South, Mr Arafat Khan, on Monday, Maj. Gen. Mokgware, said the ministry was in the process of digitalising services to enable applicants to conveniently submit their applications from the comfort of their homes.
He said the initiative was expected to significantly enhance service delivery, streamline processes and improve overall customer satisfaction.
“The digitalisation includes the introduction of a Digital Identity (ID) document and an online passport platform,” he said.
Maj. Gen. Mokgware said the Digital ID was one of the key projects identified from Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) which was envisaged to expedite the issuance of National Identity cards and passports.
He stated that currently, the ministry through technical assistance from African Development Bank was undertaking a feasibility study to facilitate Botswana to identify a key partner to develop a self-sustaining solution to implement the project.
Maj. Gen Mokgware highlighted that the ministry would be piloting production of electronic Identity Document before the end of the year, to gauge its readiness to provide the service within a single day adding that online passport application platform was expected to start in the coming financial year.
MP for Molepolole North, Mr Khan, had asked the Minister when his ministry would undertake reforms within the Department of Civil and National registration (Omang) and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to ensure that Omang and passport could be processed and issued within a day to improve efficiency and reduce backlog experienced by citizens.
