Humble and instantly approachable - tribute to Godfrey Mpuse

20 Nov 2025

I can still vividly remember my first assignment at Botswana Press Agency.

I was paired with this fresh, light-skinned, handsome young man to cover the groundbreaking ceremony of Bokamoso Private Hospital.

“I am Godfrey Mpuse,” he introduced himself.

Humble, warm, and instantly approachable. During the assignment, seeing that I was nervous, he joked and asked what drink I liked. I told him I was taking some juice. He laughed and made sure I was comfortable throughout.

There are people who make a work environment tense, you can’t speak freely around them. But not Goddy. He made my very first assignment memorable, and I even told him about it a few weeks ago. I don’t know why, but I’m grateful I did.

When I returned to Gaborone from the rural areas where I had been transferred for some years, he welcomed me warmly: “Ke gone mokgabo o le ng mo mathateng, our fashionista.”

He used to tell me that he liked my style and admired my fashion sense. Bathung! He always had a compliment ready whenever we worked together.

Goddy the professional.

As I wrote on my Facebook, the Goddy I knew was thoroughly professional, always ahead of his colleagues, always alert, always ready. One minute you would be standing next to him wondering when the guest of honour would arrive. The next, you would find him at the front, capturing the perfect angles, somehow still ahead of the guests themselves.

Just recently, we were together at Hotel 4:30 covering Vice President, Mr Ndaba Gaolatlhe. And last week Tuesday, I was with him again covering the State Visit of the President of India. A few weeks ago, we also worked side by side at the Biodiversity Summit.

I am grateful that I got the chance to work with him during his last days. Such a powerful, talented, deeply professional photographer. I still don’t know how to process the fact that I was working with him just days ago and now he is no more.

Robala ka kgotso, Godfrey Mpuse, our award-winning photographer, our colleague, our friend. ENDS
