Battle of the titans tonight
14 Nov 2025
A mother of all battles is expected as two Botswana Premier League giants, Gaborone United (GU) and Mochudi Centre Chiefs meet at GU Stadium this evening. Unbeaten this season, GU are the log leaders with 25 points from nine games played; eight wins and one draw. Mochudi Centre Chiefs on one hand are in position five with 19 points from 10 outings from which they won five games, drew four and lost one.
Although Gaborone United has proved to be a free-scoring team, may find it hard to penetrate Magosi’s solid defence. ‘Swagger Boys’ almost impenetrable backline, is marshalled by defenders in Sisqo Haraseb and Thabang Khuduga.
The team will however, miss the services of Shanganani Ngada who is out on injury. On the other hand, for them to keep GU at bay, they have to guard Mpho Kgaswane, Thabo Maponda, and Lebogang Ditsele. Sunday Standard sport editor, Botlhale Koothopile is of the view that over the years, the encounter had been and still was a clash to look out for.
“When Chiefs started emerging as a title-winning team during the Ernest Molome and the late Clifford Mogomotsi era, it disrupted the dominance of GU and Rollers as the two powerhouses of the elite league. Their encounter with the two teams turned into fierce rivalries, which decided the fate of the league,” he said.
As it stands, he said GU sits at the top after a seven-game winning streak while Chiefs’ prospects had been a hit and miss. He said they won two of their last five matches, lost one and drew two and were now six points behind log leaders GU.
Koothopile said GU would clearly be seeking revenge, given that in the last game between the two, GU lost by a solitary goal, a loss that nearly derailed their title chase. “Worse still, they were losing to Piro, a coach who left their camp mid season to join Magosi.
Therefore, this will be a grudge match. However, with his (Moloi’s) innate knowledge of GU, it will not be an easy game,” he said. In other games to be played on Saturday, Morupule Wanderers will face Sua Flamingoes at Palapye Stadium.
Black Lions and Police will have a date at Royal Aria Stadium whereas Extension Gunners and Calendar Star will play at Lobatse Sports Complex. Orapa United will host Santa Green at Itekeng Stadium, while on Sunday a double header will be played at GU Stadium, with Matebele and Jwaneng Galaxy being first on the pitch at 4pm, followed by Township Rollers and BDF X1 at 7pm.
