Local films to play on Mzansi magic

12 Nov 2025

Three local films, Route 2, Abashwe, and Moporofete: The Prophet are set to debut on Mzansi Magic on Saturdays starting November 15 to 29.

The movies, produced by acclaimed Botswana filmmakers Afentse Lekolwane (Route 2), Johnson Otlaadisa (Abashwe), and Tumelo Chaba (Moporofete: The Prophet), mark Botswana’s continued rise in the film industry.

Lekolwane, best known for her sharp comedic delivery in hit series such as Beauty, is once again delivering the laughs with her latest creation, Route 2.

The film is a richly humorous and visually striking tale of survival, loneliness and the unpredictable magic of shared journeys. It promises viewers an emotional road trip that explores how human connection often emerges from the most unexpected detours in life.

Speaking at the MultiChoice Botswana press conference, Lekolwane said: “This film is not just a story, it is about the character,” highlighting that the combi and the many hilarious props in the film acted as characters themselves, giving the story a richer comedic edge.

Chaba’s The Prophet is set to tug at the hearts of movie fans obsessed with themes of betrayal, vengeance and redemption.

The story follows the life of a vengeful Jacob, who creates a fake prophetic ministry to exact revenge after his father loses a million-pula property to a manipulative church, a tragedy that leads to the untimely death of both his parents.

Yet, when love unexpectedly finds him, he faces a moral crossroads between forgiveness and vengeance. Reflecting on his journey, Chaba described the film’s backstory as one of rejection and perseverance, calling Mzansi Magic’s interest in his project a breakthrough moment.

“This is my ‘Now I am here moment,” he said, one he hoped to relive again next year.

For hopeless romantics, Abashwe is the film to watch. The story follows the emotional journey of a resilient single mother who has long given up on love. Scarred by past disappointments, she remains skeptical even when she meets a charming young executive who seems genuinely interested in her.

Otlaadisa expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to showcase his film on Africa’s leading storytelling platform, describing it as ‘a filmmaker’s dream come true’.

MultiChoice Botswana managing director, Stephanie Pillay, expressed her excitement, saying: “We are thrilled to bring these local films to our viewers. Our commitment to local content is unwavering and we believe these films will inspire and entertain audiences of all ages.”

At their core, the films celebrate Botswana’s rich cultural heritage and diverse narratives while capturing compelling stories that resonate deeply with local audiences. They also stand as bold testaments to the exceptional talent of Botswana’s filmmakers and actors. ENDS
