Maun-based powerlifter, Ahmad Aboulela, has once again defended the Northern Powerlifting Championships extra super heavyweight title.
Aboulela who has held the title for eight years, dominated the competition in Francistown on November 9, beating Roy Ramaphane of Vionic Club by 7.17 to 6.573, despite Ramaphane's heavier weight of 117.3 kg.
The crowd was in awe of Aboulela's strength as he lifted massive weights, with his strength drawing comparisons to a lion. The 116.6kg heavy lifter's signature style of shouting before each lift has become a hit with the crowd and has also been copied by other lifters.
The event also saw 20 women competing in three categories, with Koziba Kerstead of 2 Brigade Powerlifting Club taking the heavyweight title. Dinah Tapologo of Vionic Club was the overall best woman, while Mike Puleng of Selebi Phikwe took the men's title.
Lt. Col Gabasenye Lekgetho, chairperson of the 2 Brigade club, said the event had grown in popularity and attracted powerlifters and spectators across the country.
He emphasised the importance of promoting wellness and relaxation, especially during this time of increasing non-communicable diseases. He said the event was a success as the community showed increased interest and participation.
"The army's interaction with the community has helped to promote the event and encourage people to prioritise their health," he disclosed. ENDS
