 The anticipated multi-billion Pula Mophane Cargo International Airport project in Selebi Phikwe will be developed through a strategic private sector-led partnership in collaboration with relevant government ministries, says the Minister for State President, Mr Moeti Mohwasa.

Speaking during the potential investor site visit meeting in Selebi Phikwe on Friday, Mr Mohwasa said the decision aimed not only to enhance the region’s infrastructure but also to leverage the collaborative potential of the private sector synergy to fulfil key economic objectives.

Mr Mohwasa articulated that employing the private sector partnership model was also to attract substantial private sector investment and specialised expertise into the airport development, ensuring that the expected facility would be equipped to handle the increasing cargo demands, thus positioning the country as a vital logistics hub.

He said that preparations for the ground-breaking ceremony of the project were in full swing, with the event scheduled to take place in January.

Mr Mohwasa underscored that the Mophane Cargo International Airport project would not only mark a milestone for the region but also symbolise the fruitful collaboration between government and the private sector.

“This airport project represents a significant milestone in the continuous journey toward achieving the goals of collaborative efforts between the private sector and government ministries, paving the way for sustainable development in the region and the country,” he said.

He further said the expected state-of-the-art facility is set to invigorate multiple sectors of the local economy, serving as a vital hub for trade and logistics both regionally and internationally, stimulating commerce and enhancing supply chain efficiencies.

Additionally, the airport's operations would foster innovation and generate a significant number of employment opportunities, providing local communities with access to jobs in various fields related to freight.

The project manager for Mophane Cargo International Airport, Mr Ramotlatsi Rakhudu said the purpose of the investor site visit was to facilitate a comprehensive due diligence process for various stakeholders interested in investing in the project. ENDS
