Nkobolo appeals for support

Former 400m sprinter and national team athlete Onkabetse Nkobolo has called on companies to support his mission of changing perceptions about people with disabilities, ensuring they are truly seen and included.
In an interview with BOPA at the second edition of the Play Without Boundaries event at the University of Botswana on Saturday, Nkobolo explained that he launched the initiative after realising many individuals with disabilities were often kept at home, and being denied the opportunity to engage with the outside world.
He said that exposure was vital for their mental wellbeing and demonstrated that they could accomplish what able-bodied people could do.
Despite the scorching sun, teams from Mochudi, Ramotswa, and Gaborone participated in wheelchair basketball, tennis, and blind football, highlighting the event’s inclusive spirit.
“...able-bodied participants joined in the wheelchair games to gain a better understanding and experience of what those with disabilities face,” said Nkobolo.
He said that participation has increased since the inaugural event last year, with more people eager to get involved.
Nkobolo revealed that he received messages from as far as Kasane and Francistown expressing interest in participating, but lack of sponsorship often prevented potential participants from attending due to lack of finances to cover transportation, accommodation and food costs.
He lamented the reluctance of many companies to proactively support such initiatives.
Nevertheless, Nkobolo has established regional groups aimed at providing motivation and ensuring a wider reach, visiting places like Moroka and Ramotswa to promote inclusion.
Looking ahead, his dream is to organise a tournament next year, bringing together participants from across different areas.BOPA
