16 Oct 2025
Cyclists and fitness enthusiasts will converge in Toteng on Saturday for the fourth edition of the annual Lake Ngami Cycling Classic.
Organised by MMG Khoemacau Copper mine, this year’s event is held under the theme: Riding Towards Impact, reflecting the mine’s commitment to use cycling as a vehicle for positive change in promoting wellness, uniting communities and driving social upliftment across host villages.
Bomaid chief executive officer, Moraki Mokgosana is the chief rider. According to the mine’s director of external affairs, Boikobo Paya, the event had attracted participants from across the region including community leaders, local entrepreneurs and families.
He said the event was introduced, as a platform to collaborate with their business partners to raise funds toward addressing some socio-economic development needs presented by local communities within their zone of influence.
He also appreciated that the event did not only promote health and wellness, but also served as a key fundraising platform for its corporate social responsibility initiative, which directly supported the communities of Sehithwa, Komana, Toteng, Legotlhwane, Somelo, Bodibeng and Botlhatlogo.
Last year’s edition saw the mine and its partners donating P2 million to Ngami Junior Secondary School for the improvement of water reticulation system and construction of a digital laboratory.
Even though there had been some concerns regarding the donation as some leaders accused the mine for not fulfilling the promise, he revealed in a recent council meeting that the funds were directed towards drilling of a borehole in Toteng to improve the potable water supply in the village.
He added that Ngami school also benefited, as some of the money was allocated to improving the current state of the school.
He highlighted that their wish was to redesign the water reticulation system within school, refurbish the boys and girls’ dormitories, school kitchen restoration post a fire incident, renovate staff room as well as building of a digital library, science laboratory, ablution blocks and lockers. ENDS
