Basotho re-unite in Tlhareseleele
09 Oct 2025
A group of Basotho from Botswana and Lesotho have organised a re-union event called Lebone La Tsosoloso slated for Friday in Tlhareseleele.
The event is aimed to restore and revive the Basotho culture, which according to the chief of Tlhareseleele Morena Letshikhoana, had been eroding.
In an interview, Morena Letshikhoana said it was critical to guard against cultural erosion and dilution. He emphasised that culture and language could not be separated, noting that it was crucial to ensure that ‘Sotho’ language was promoted by teaching it in schools.
Morena Letshikhoana said culture was easily lost through assimilation when people adopted the customs and beliefs of a dominant culture. He said that as Basotho of Tlhareseleele lived in Borolong area with Barolong, assimilation was bound to take place. He said the event was meant for all Basotho in Botswana, not only those living in Tlhareseleele.
He said that as Basotho from Lesotho arrived in Botswana on Thursday, Lebone La Tsosoloso would be accompanied from Ramatlabama border by men riding on horses. They will have a bornfire event on Thursday night with a delegation from Lesotho, where families would reunite and network.
On Friday, men would be donning Sotho blankets while women would be wearing red leteishi dresses for Basotho. The event would be graced by various traditional groups from both Tswana and Sotho traditions with a guest artist Ditiro Leero. ENDS
