The Region 5 Marathon will be hosted at the iconic Union Buildings in Tshwane, South Africa on Sunday.

A press release from Region 5 says winners of the 21.1km (men and women) will each get R50,000, while second and third placed finishers will take home R20,000 and R10,000 respectively.

As for the 10km race the winners will walk away with R15,000, while second placed will get R7,000 and R6,000 for third place.

The press release further says alongside the flagship 21.1km and 10km races, the programme will include the official 5km race and a 5km fun run, as well as the 1-mile (1.6km) event for athletes with disabilities.

“Adding to this year’s excitement, the event will be bolstered by the popular Big Walk, which is expected to attract an additional 10,000 participants, bringing a festive spirit and transforming Tshwane into a hub of mass participation,” says the release.

Furthermore, the Big Walk is designed to bring families and communities together, adding that the Region 5 Marathon remains the centrepiece, displaying elite and recreational runners alike.

Race director Enoch Skosana said; "This marathon is a flagship event for our southern region, and we cannot afford to see it fall short of its potential. We are appealing to athletes, clubs and federations across southern Africa to act now and register online before the October 5 deadline.

 “Athletes stand to gain not only the pride of representing their countries and clubs, but also meaningful financial rewards. We urge runners and athletics bodies to take advantage of this opportunity while registration is still open. Let us rally together, fill the start line and make this edition one of the most successful in Region 5 history.” ENDS
