Linguistic recognition central to unity

For first time from September 29, news bullentin will be broadcasted in four more languages; iKalanga, Naro, Shekgalagari and Sheyei on Botswana Television and Radio Botswana.
Currently, the news bulletin are read in English and Setswana.
The latest developement was launched in Gaborone by President Advocate Duma Boko, who said linguistic recognition was central to equity and unity.
He said the move was part of a phased programme to promote Botswana's linguistic heritage, adding that it also marked the first stage of a broader effort that would extend to more languages and eventually inclusion in schools.
He argued that children learnt better in their home languages and called for policymakers to revise the Constitution to give indigenous languages formal recognition.
He added that protecting local languages would not hinder development, citing international examples.
Meanwhile, representatives from across the country attended the event. Delegates from D’kar in Ghanzi showcased Naro, while Ms Kopangwa Andreck-Kololo of the Kamanakao Executive Committee in Gumare welcomed the inclusion of Sheyei. ENDS
