Mosquito narrowly beat English Boy in a thrilling 2 000 metres Tswana breed grand race to win the Boipuso Derby Horse Race in Tshane on Saturday.

Owned by Moisapula Omang of Velkom in Kgalagadi North, Mosquito claimed away with a prize of P2,500.

English Boy from Tlhage Stables in Hukuntsi settled for P1,500, while Distance owned by Katai Jackson of Morwamusu, finished third and collected P1,000.

Held in celebration of Botswana’s upcoming 59th independence day, the horse race saw more than 40 Tswana breed horses mostly from Kgalagadi District compete in six thrilling races.

According to the event organiser, Ofentse Kgogobi, the derby was held with an objective to promote Tswana and mule breeds, and also to raise funds to support boot camp for Sandard Seven pupils at Tshane Primary School.

Kgogobi pointed out that the derby had grown into a key event on the independence calendar, not only entertaining the community but also giving back through philanthropy in education.

“This race is more than just competition. It brings people together, promotes care for our local Tswana and mule breeds, and helps us raise funds to support standard seven pupils as they prepare for their final examinations,” he said.

He indicated that while most horse races in Botswana focused on Thoroughbreds, the Boipuso derby placed the spotlight on Tswana and mule breeds.

“The event is not designed for profit, It is about showcasing Tshane, attracting visitors during the holidays, and creating business opportunities for small enterprises in our community,” he said.

The event attracted competitors from villages across the Kgalagadi District, including Morwamusu, Phuduhudu, Kokong, Inalegolo and Kang in the south, as well as Ukhwi, Lokgwabe, and Maake in the north.

Despite being self-sponsored, the derby is recognised on the national racing calendar and has continued to attract strong crowds. With strong community spirit, exciting competition, and cultural pride, the event has become a highlight of independence festivities. ENDS
