Initiative paves way for city tourism

Acting President Ndaba Gaolathe on Thursday launched the new city bus service in Gaborone, describing it as a milestone in the government’s efforts to transform Botswana’s urban centres into vibrant tourism destinations.
Speaking at the City Tourism Launch, Mr Gaolatlhe said the newly introduced city bus would not only ease movements for residents, but would also provide tourists with an opportunity to experience Gaborone's cultural, historical and economic landmarks.
He stressed that city tourism was more than branding but reimagining of towns into living ecosystems of culture, commerce and connection.
Mr Gaolathe said the initiative would stimulate economic growth, create jobs, diversify opportunities for youth and women and align with the Botswana Economic Transformation Plan for long-term sustainability.
He therefore challenged citizens and businesses to own the initiative, ensuring that it dovetails with events such as music festivals, sport activities and religions gatherings to generate consistent income for local enterprises.
"The city bus is just the beginning. It represents our vision of accessible, inclusive and sustainable tourism that tells the story of our people, our history and our cities," he said. ENDS
