Paakanyo pleads for DJs support

Local entertainer, Maatla Paakanyo popularly known as DJ Rass Jele, has appealed to event organisers, promoters, and sponsors to support and invest in up-coming DJs across the country.
Highlighting the challenges faced by many local artists, he emphasised the lack of platforms, exposure, and essential equipment as major hurdles to career growth in Botswana’s entertainment industry.
“I have never received any endorsement or support from the government. There is need for structured support like sponsorships, sound equipment provision, and organised DJ competitions that allow us to perform in front of large crowds with professional sound setups,” he said in an interview.
Paakanyo also expressed concern over how DJs were often undervalued in the industry. “Sometimes promoters pay us with alcohol instead of money. That is demoralising. We are all trying to make an honest living, and practices like these break our confidence. It needs to stop,” he said.
Paakanyo encouraged aspiring DJs to remain passionate and committed, no matter the challenges. “We need to unite and form our own DJs unions. That way, we can collaborate, support each other, and speak with one voice. Follow your dreams. Don’t let negativity pull you down. Our families may not always support us at first, but once they see your passion and progress, they will come around,” he said.
DJ Rass Jele is calling on sponsors, event planners, and the public to book him for events including weddings, parties, graduations, and more. A dancer, MC, and self-taught DJ based in Kanye, Paakanyo began his journey into music in 2010.
He credits his early exposure of deejaying to Tshepo Charles, whose father DJ Tebza owned a sound system. This access to equipment provided a vital platform in his formative years. He also draws inspiration from Kanye musician, Sparks Lehipi, whose passion for music left a lasting impression.
“I was once a host DJ for the Detroit Family alongside DJ Nanzah. We organised some of the most well-attended parties in Kanye annually, but unfortunately, the event was halted after the fourth edition due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Paakanyo has performed in almost every bar in Ntsweng ward, Kanye, a testament to his dedication and popularity in the local entertainment scene. Despite his experience, he said the path had not been easy. ENDS
