Wells celebrate victory

The Jwaneng-based Wells International Softball Club men’s team celebrated their victory on August 30, having won the 2025 Extravaganza tournament held during the President’s Holidays last month.
The team made history by going undefeated throughout the tournament, triumphing over seven other teams with a cumulative score of 36 runs, to clinch the cup that they last had in 2023.
“We are celebrating this championship because it is not an ordinary victory. We are the first team to not concede throughout the tournament,” said the club chairperson, Bafana Lenkopane in an interview on the sidelines of a celebratory friendly game between Wells and Police IX.
He added that in order to maintain their winning streak, the club was planning to take softball into schools through grassroots development initiatives. That, he said would help to build a stronger team while ensuring its sustainability for the future.
The event organiser, Batsetswe Gontlafetse, said the team’s sterling performance warranted a celebration with the club’s pioneers. "The fact that our team won all five of its games at the tournament indicates that we are doing something good. We decided to come together with the pioneers who started this club in 1993 to celebrate with the team and honour the legacy they left for us,” Gontlafetse said.
Gontlafetse, a former Wells chairperson, also praised the team’s overall growth and standing over the years. "Extravaganza is a Wells tournament and we have been to the finals many times. After COVID-19, we won the tournament in 2024, we were the silver medallists in the following edition and are now back to being the champions this year,” he said. ENDS
