Botswana athletes eye Diamond League glory
28 Aug 2025
Botswana's 200m star Letsile Tebogo is set to resume his rivalry on the track with USA sprinter Noah Lyles in the Diamond League finals at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich at 9:39pm tonight.
Lyles has been given an international wild card by the Diamond League for this event. Tebogo shocked the world by snatching the Olympics 200m title away from Lyles who was the favourite last year in Paris.
The most recent meeting between the two was at the Monaco Diamond League last month where Lyles won the contest in 19.88 seconds while Tebogo came second with 19.97. Tebogo is renowned for his calmness in situations where it feels like he is entering a lion’s den.
No African has ever won the 200m men’s title at the Diamond League since its inception in 2010. In contrast, Lyles will be aiming to make it five 200m titles after winning it in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022.
The 200m final list includes Nigerian Chudi Onwuzurike, USA's Kyree King and Robert Gregory, Reynier Robert from Cuba, Liberian Joseph Fanbulleh and Dominican Republic sprinter Alexander Ogando. In the 400m men's final at 6:42pm, two Botswana quatermillers Bayapo Ndori and Collen Kebinatshipi will be contesting for some Diamond League silverware.
A fierce battle is expected in the 800m men's final at 9:20pm where Botswana‘s Tshepiso Masalela will be fighting for the Diamond trophy against Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Algerian Djamel Sedjati, Canadian Marco Arop and USA’s Josh Hoey. ENDS
