Pastors highlight church role in community building

Religious leaders and traditional authorities have emphasised the role played by churches in shaping moral values, supporting vulnerable communities and addressing modern social challenges.
In an interview, Prophet Meshack Mangadi of Heavenly Garrison Ministries said the church was instrumental in shaping people’s character and instilling values that lay the foundation for strong, peaceful societies.
“A church is more than a place of worship, it is where people learn principles, discipline and the importance of living with integrity,” he said.
He added that good morals taught in churches could help reduce crime and violence, especially among young people. Prophet Gideon Keabetswe of Heavenly Enlightened Saints Church said churches added great value to individual character and national development.
“No man is an island, all denominations must work together to fight social ills as one,” he said.
He expressed concern over growing parental neglect, particularly in Maun, where he had observed cases of parents discouraging children from attending church, yet showing little concern when the same children engage in unruly behaviour.
“It is worrying. We need parents to work hand-in-hand with the church to instill the right principles in children so they can become responsible leaders of tomorrow,” he urged.
Prophet Keabetswe also recommended government to engage with churches by creating platforms that enabled them to offer counselling and guidance beyond traditional worship spaces.
Adding a traditional leadership perspective, Kgosi Cosmos Lelathego of Moeti Ward commended churches in his area for their ongoing support to the community. He said churches have contributed significantly, including helping build Village Development Committee (VDC) structures and providing donations and counselling services, all of which he described as essential in modern times.
“They always show up when needed, and that consistency matters,” said Kgosi Lelathego.
He also offered words of encouragement to the youth, urging them to be alert and take full advantage of opportunities available to them, including access to free internet. Collaboration among families, government, and faith-based institutions is encouraged to ensure Botswana’s communities were built on strong values, practical support and hope for the future. ENDS
