In an interesting move, Minister of Sport and Arts Jacob Kelebeng, has enrolled in the prestigious Advanced Sports Management Course (ASMC), joining Class of 2025 Intake 16.
Minister Kelebeng is one of 46 participants who will spend a full year preparing for presentations and examinations. During the launch of Class of 2025 Intake 16 in Gaborone on August 16, Kelebeng, dressed in a tracksuit and sneakers interacted with other participants as they prepared to begin the challenging programme. In an interview, he stated that he decided to take the course because it directly related to his ministerial duties.
“As a minister responsible for sport, I found it necessary to do the Advanced Sports Management Course (ASMC) that is related to what I am currently doing,” he said.
He was confident that the course would give him the capacity to make well-informed and conclusive decisions on sport matters. Despite his tight schedule, the minister said he was determined to make time for his classes.
“All my life, I have been doing many things at the same time. I am also a student at the University of Botswana, doing my final master’s dissertation,” he added.
Kelebeng emphasised the importance of balancing time between his ministerial work, his constituency as well as his studies. He believed his commitment should serve as a motivation to the youth, proving that one must be able to multi-task to achieve their goals. The ASMC curriculum includes modules on organising major sport events, human resources, finance, marketing and strategic planning.
The minister’s decision aligned with a suggestion from Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) chairperson, Marumo Morule, who had recommended that all sporting codes and appointments should consider ASMC graduates. Kelebeng shared Morule’s sentiments that the course provided competency in areas such as good governance, hosting major events and marketing.
“I believe it is important for us to consider those who have sport management qualifications to serve in sport,” Morule said. ENDS
