Matobo community celebrate culture
16 Aug 2025
The community of Matobo in Nkange constituency celebrated their culture today with a showcase of their traditional artifacts and tools, which they used back in the olden days.
These included traditional chairs made from wood and animal hides, sledge (selei), yoke (jokwe), woven baskets (ditlatlana), and many others.
Speaking at their annual cultural day celebration, community member Mr Foreman Baganetswe explained that the annual cultural day, which was on its fourth year, was celebrated in August when most of their people had finished harvesting their produce from the fields and they were back in the village.
He said the organising committee and Bogosi were responsible for planning the event, adding that when it started it was held at the main kgotla, but they eventually decided to find a suitable place, which they turned into a cultural village.
Mr Baganetswe noted that they approached the land board and were allocated the plot, adding that they had embarked on initiatives of developing it so that it could be used all year round for different activities in the village.
He said those using the cultural village would be charged a fee as a way of generating funds for the cultural day celebrations as well as for the upkeep of the place.
Besides displaying traditional tools and artifacts, he said they had arranged for historical teaching for people attending the event and they also embarked on writing names of types of trees around the village so that people could be able learn and distinguish them. ENDS
