A total of 188 deaths from 162 accidents have been recorded from January to August 10  this year compared  to 145 fatal accidents which resulted in 173 deaths recorded in 2024 during the same period.

 

Speaking at the district road safety committee capacity building workshop in Gumare recently, MVA Fund Maun branch manager, Mr Cecil Mosojane said out of this number, a total of 25 lives had been lost in the area that falls under Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund Maun area.

Maun area has recorded nine accidents, Boteti seven and five incidents were recorded in Sehithwa while Gumare and Chobe recorded two accidents each.

He said 18 victims were males and most of them were drivers, which was  worrisome.

Gumare Police Station traffic officer Assistant Superintendent Tshotlego Kgobero said his area of jurisdiction that covered Habu to Ikoga in Okavango District had recorded a total of number of 20 road accidents in the second quarter of 2025 with two fatal accidents.

Assistant Supt Kgobero said three minor accidents were recorded with seven minor injuries in the second quarter of 2025.

He observed that most accidents were due to driver errors while a less percentage was due to adverse road and weather conditions adding that some part of the road were under construction while heavy rainfall were experienced this year.

MVA Fund senior manager injury prevention, Mr Mompati Bontsibokae said District Road Safety Committees needed capacitation since road safety was key to sustainable development.

 Mr Bontsibokae said road safety was affected by various issues such as physical planning and conservation since the locality of modern and natural resources had impact on causes of road accidents.

He therefore said empowerment of district committees would lead Botswana to achieve the world’s 50 per cent target Decades of Action for Road Safety of 2021 to 2030.

Mr Bontsibokae observed that districts committees were expected to create own strategies that promoted road safety that were aligned to the national strategy. ENDS
