Ministry of Water and Human Settlement has secured land for the construction of housing units in Maun North constituency through the Bonno National Housing Programme.
Answering a question in Parliament recently, Minister Onnetse Ramogapi said a total of 57.7 hectares of land had been secured in the constituency, with 15 hectares in Moeti Ward earmarked for an infill neighbourhood layout to be developed by private investors, adding that the development was expected to yield 103 housing units.
In addition, Mr Ramogapi said 42.7 hectares of land had been allocated in Matlapana Ward, also under the same programme, adding that the site was projected to deliver 632 housing units, bringing the total number of housing units expected in Maun North to 735, based on land secured so far.
“As part of the government’s broader commitment to providing adequate and affordable housing for Batswana, discussions with the land authority to reserve more land for the ministry are ongoing,” Mr Ramogapi said.
He further confirmed that construction of 100 housing units had already started in Matlapana Ward.
Meanwhile, he said in Moeti Ward, the process of engaging private investors was ongoing, adding that a shortlist of potential investors had been compiled and they were currently finalising funding arrangements and reviewing draft contracts.
“We anticipate that contracts will be awarded to the successful investors by the end of August, subsequently, contractors are expected to mobilise and begin construction within four weeks of the contract award,” he said.
The minister said the timeline for completion of the entire Maun North project was two years from the end of September, adding that the first 100 housing units already under construction were expected to be completed within a year. He further announced that each of the three constituencies in Maun were expected to receive approximately 1 000 housing units as part of the government’s nationwide pledge to construct 100 000 houses by October 2029.
He added that the government launched the construction of 61 000 housing units across all 61 constituencies on July 8.
He was responding to a question from the Maun North MP, Mr Dumelang Saleshando who had inquired about the number of houses Maun constituencies would receive under the national housing plan.
Mr Saleshando had also wanted to know if land for the construction of the houses has been secured in Maun North Constituency or earmarked.
He further wanted to know when construction is expected to commence and the expected completion timelines. ENDS
