Boko bestows medals on police officers

Over 900 members of the Botswana Police Service (BPS) have been awarded medals in recognition of their outstanding service and gracious conduct in executing duties.

President Advocate Duma Boko, who is also the Commander In Chief of Armed Forces, bestowed the Botswana Police Medal for Meritorious Service (BPM) award on members of the BPS who served 12 years or more and set a good example by their conduct and diligence.

The President also bestowed the Botswana Police Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O) on members of the BPS who have distinguished themselves by their devotion to duty and have served for a period of 30 years.

He also bestowed the Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medals (L.S.G.C.M) and Botswana Police Jubilee Service Medals (J.S.M) on some of the high ranking recipients.

The Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medals were awarded to officers who have not been convicted of any offence involving moral turpitude and have not been frequently guilty of minor disciplinary offences.

To qualify for the awards the officer should also not had incurred more than six convictions during the last 16 years of service.

Ministers; Mr Moeti Mohwasa for State President, Dr Phenyo Butale for International Relations, and Justice and Correctional Services’, Mr Nelson Ramaotwana bestowed Botswana Police Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O) and the J.S.M and the L.S.G.C.M to some of the low ranking officers.

In an interview, one of the awardees, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Pilane Sebigi, who received the Botswana Police Distinguished Service Order Medal, said, ‘this medal is a reward of the hard work, devotion, dedication and commitment that I have demonstrated during my 30 years in service’.

He advised upcoming officers to always display professionalism in their service and to live up to the BPS mandate of ensuring the safety and security of Batswana.

Another Jubilee Service Medal recipient, Assistant Commissioner Ms Oabajang Basitang said the medal was testament of her good conduct and character since joining the police force in 1998 as a cadet inspector.

“The medal is a sign of diligence and loyalty that I  have demonstrated over the years which has risen me through the ranks,” she said. ENDS
