No plans to increase dams capacity
13 Feb 2014
Parliament has been informed that there are no plans to increase the holding capacity of Gaborone Dam particularly that the dam had not shown any indications of oversupply.
Answering a question in Parliament on February 12 the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Dikgakgamatso Seretse said the dam had never been desilted and the level of siltation was negligible hence did not warrant desiltation.
Responding on behalf of the Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Mr Seretse said, “the siltation level in the dam is below five per cent therefore does not warrant the desiltation of the dam.”
Member of Parliament (MP) for Gaborone South, Mr Kagiso Molatlhegi had asked the minister whether there were plans to increase the water holding capacity of Gaborone Dam, when the dam was desilted and whether Water Utilities Corporation would take advantage of the current dry spell and desilt the dam.
