Pupils must shape own future
13 Feb 2014
Orphans and vulnerable pupils at Gumare Primary School have been advised to be responsible for shaping their own future by being active in their studies.
The manager of a local hardware outlet, MN Hardware, Mr Tilly Thomas made the advice at a party organised for orphans and vulnerable pupils in Gumare recently. Mr Thomas said students should not think that their future is going to be driven by other people for them to benefit freely.
“It is your responsibility to shape your own future by being active in your studies,” he guided, adding: “Choose what can make your life and that of others to prosper.”
The hardware manager said government has made it possible for students to have easy access to education, an opportunity they must not abuse. He also urged students to be well disciplined, mannered and courteous at all times, as well as respect their culture, values and traditions for a better education.
The shopkeeper further complained that some students who had the potential to pass failed to progress because of partaking in alcohol and drugs, as well as indulging in premature sexual encounters.
“Please, desist from practicing such behaviors because it is not good for your life and future,” Mr Thomas warned. On the other hand, he commended teachers for the good job they are doing despite the fact that teaching is a demanding profession.
Turning to parents, he said it is their duty as parents to give their children positive reinforcement as opposed to negativity. He advised them to let their children know the benefits and prosperities of life.
The Social and Community Development (S&CD) officer, Mr Victor Thake said there are 1 812 needy students and 1 344 orphans in the Okavango sub-district. Mr Thake complained that some parents do not take care of their children because some of them go to school without wearing the required school uniform; they also wear dirty and tattered clothes, he added.
He also accused those who label these children such as by calling them funny names, saying they should stop the habit and instead give them love and respect their rights. The Okavango AIDS Coordinator, Mr Morongwa Dikgang praised the teachers for organising the party and urged them to continue with such a spirit annually. ENDS
