Motor Sport fanatics on Saturday descended to Orapa to witness the national team in preparation for the intercontinental championship scheduled for Zimbabwe in August.
Motorbike riders displayed a spectacular performance, proving their determination to represent the country.
“Botswana Motor Sport is set and well prepared to bring home at least one medal from the intercontinental championship,” Botswana Motor Sport (BMS) president Kagiso Modibedi said in an interview.
He, however, noted that their preparations were hindered by financial constraints, citing that they only started training two months back. He indicated that BMS competed in the 2024 intercontinental championships in Cape Town South Africa and brought home a bronze medal while the country also attained position four in the 2018 championships.
Modibedi said funds permitting, riders were supposed to be on fitness training camp every week, noting that during training riders, worked on their fitness and track training.
He indicated that they started training from grassroot level with support usually coming from family and well wishers.
Commenting on the turn-up of supporters, he said it was not bad but they would work more on promoting the event.
Orapa Motorsport chairperson Tinaye Manyothwane said the objective was to resuscitate motorsport that used to be the talk of town in Orapa.
“Orapa used to be leading in motorsport but it died silently,” he said, noting availability of facilities that needed to utilised by young riders.
One of the participants who scooped position one in the MX2 senior category, Kalahari Cross Country Club’s Kosmas Mamaloukos said he was determined to be amongst the top 10 despite competition from other African riders.
Another participant, Tommy-Jayden Wotherspoon who grabbed position one in the junior category attributed his good performance to training hard.
His expectation was to scoop position one in the African championships. Andile Mogorosi scooped position one in the high school category. ENDS
