Ntungamili Raguin, whose native Kalanga name means ‘leader,’ demonstrated the true essence of his name during Saturday’s Davis Cup Africa Group V playoffs against Madagascar.
Throughout the matches, Raguin remained calm under pressure, focused, disciplined, and determined; qualities that meaningfully contributed to Botswana’s victory.
His resilience and powerful play not only showcased his individual strength, but also ultimately secured Botswana’s promotion to Davis Cup Group IV.
Such compelling performance cemented Raguin’s reputation as a true leader on the court. The day’s proceedings began with Raguin facing Madagascar’s Lucas Andriamasilalao in the singles.Raguin took control, wrapping up the first set 6-3 and giving his opponent a tough challenge. Each time he scored a point, the spectators at the Notwane tennis courts erupted in cheers, shouting and chanting his name, ‘Ntunga.’
Although the set initially seemed to favour Andriamasilalao, Raguin made a strong comeback, demonstrating that he indeed leads on the court. In the second set, Raguin appeared even more determined to secure the win, finishing with a commanding 6-2 score.
Despite some games reaching deuce, he maintained composure with powerful serves and excellent rallying, culminating in a display of great skill and leadership that left no doubt of his intent to lead Botswana team to victory.
Raguin also participated in the doubles match later in the day, teaming up with fellow tennis star Mark Nawa. They faced Madagascar’s duo of Valentin Rakotondrasoa and Nicolas Raharivony. Although Raharivony kept Botswana team on their toes with his drop shots, scoring a few points for Madagascar, Botswana pair ultimately dominated, securing a 2-1 victory in the match.
Throughout these intense encounters, Raguin and Nawa coordinated their play masterfully, fuelling the crowd’s enthusiasm.
The pair’s spirited performance prompted the umpire to repeatedly remind spectators not to cheer during the rallies to maintain order and fairness.
