Cheka Molehele FC are champions of Letlhakeng President’s Day Tournament after defeating Tshakhuma Tsha FC in a penalty shootout.
Cheka Molehele won penalty shootout by 5-4 against Tshakhuma Tsha FC at Riverplate grounds on Tuesday, earning them a trophy, gold medals and P10,000 cash prize. The teams proceeded to penalties after finishing with a 1-all draw in regular play.
Cheka Molehele FC struck first, with Wilfred Dithwane scoring just eight minutes into the match, but as they thought victory was secured, Kabelo Bantsi equalised in the final moments, sending the game to a penalty shootout. Tshakhuma Tsha secured P7 500 and earned a silver medal, whereas the Golden Arrows, who finished in third place, received P5 000. Babina Phiri from Sesung in fourth position received P3 500 for their efforts.
Letlhakeng Sports Committee chairperson, Therisanyo Kasemang, acknowledged the tournament’s role in promoting sports in the district. Kasemang emphasised the importance of developing talent from the grassroots level, emphasising the need to improve women’s soccer, adding that the fact that Letlhakeng Blood Sisters and Ditshegwane Mighty Queens were curtain raisers reflects their dedication to improving women’s football.
He said the time had come for the authorities to facilitate the establishment of a football division in the district, indicating that the sport had gained significant traction in the region. The move, he said, would not only nurture talent, but also help the players in earning a living from their talent. He urged community members and government agencies as well as the business community to support their efforts meant to advance sports.
Kasemang expressed gratitude to the spectators from Letlhakeng and surrounding areas for attending in large numbers, noting that their presence helped generate prize money and made the tournament possible, as the tournament is running without a sponsor.
Kgosi Segomotso Puleng of Molehela ward commended the conduct of the spectators and players, along with the referees’ professionalism. ENDS
