Tebogo and Lyles face-off in London Diamond League

17 Jul 2025

Fresh from a thrilling showdown in Monaco last weekend, the worlds sprinters Letsile Tebogo and Noah Lyles, are set to ignite London Stadium tomorrow.

Over 60 000 spectators are anticipated to pack the venue to witness what promises to be one of the most exhilarating men’s 100-meter races of the season. Tebogo will be out for revenge after a defeat to Lyles in Monaco in the 200m sprint and will also be making his first return to the shorter 100m sprint following a disappointing 9th finish position in the same distance at the Rabat diamond league with a time of 10:43 just over a month ago.

Reigning 200m Olympic gold medalist, who struggled in Rabat, but impressed at the Eugene Diamond League clocking a world lead time of 19.76 seconds is looking to bounce back from Monaco setback and prove mettle ahead of both World Championships in Tokyo and Diamond league final as he looks to get early points on the board in both set of short sprints.

The betting orders are nonetheless against the local sprint sensation, as he will face a tough field that also, world-leader Akani Simbine and Jamaican sprinters Oblique Seville and Ackeem Blake.

Lining up alongside Tebogo will also be British trio of superstar Zharnel Hughes, Jeremiah Azu and Louie Hinchliffe who will all be hoping for home support to carry them through in pole position.

In what promises to be the most competitive 100m races of the season, Simbine has been in formidable form this year and currently holds the world lead in the men’s 100m sprint for 2025 with a time of 9.86 seconds at the Adidas Atlanta City Games in May, and prior to that also had leading time of 9.90 seconds achieved during Botswana Golden Grand Prix in April.

Inspired by a season’s best of 9.91 seconds in his last diamond league race in Eugene a fortnight ago, and a home crowd behind him, Hughes might also cause an upset in this unpredictable line up while Seville could be a dark horse heading to the finish line and knows what it takes to beat Lyles, having done just that in Jamaica last year.

With just four meetings to go until the Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich on August 27-28, the London meet will be too close to call and has what it takes for a blockbuster showdown. Meanwhile Botswana’s one lap specialists Bayapo Ndori and Collen Kebinatshipi are set to compete in the men’s 400m. ENDS
