Softball extravaganza set for weekend

As excitement builds for the 16th edition of the Selebi Phikwe Annual Softball Extravaganza, the Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee,Oeme Morupisi shared a vision for the three-day event scheduled for July 19 to 21.
In an interview, Morupisi said preparations for the anticipated event are in full swing, and the goal is to create a fun family atmosphere, generate enthusiasm for the sport and foster a love for the game in future generations.
This year’s event aims to bring families together, strengthen community bonds, and encourage a healthy, active lifestyle through sports.
“Our objective is to remain relevant each year while crafting an event that showcases the competitive spirit of softball and provides an enjoyable experience for the community”, he said.
He said a total of 16 dynamic teams, eight for both males and females, from across the country will compete in this years coveted championship title, which comes with a monetary prize of P40 000.
In addition, the teams finishing in second, third, fourth and fifth places will receive rewards of P30 000, P20 000, P18 000 and P15 000, respectively.
Morupisi said a consolation prize of P12 000 would be awarded to teams finishing in positions six, seven and eight, ensuring that every participating team departs the tournament with a sense of accomplishment and pride in their efforts.
“We are hopeful that this event will not only serve as a platform for skilled athletes to demonstrate their prowess, but it will also be a historic opportunity for teams to etch their names into the annals of the Selibe Phikwe Softball Extravaganza,” he said.
For his part, the Mayor of Selebi Phikwe Town Council, Oageng Makgosa, announced that the town is fully prepared for the influx of spectators and team players to participate in the event.
He highlighted that key preparations included enhanced street lighting and coordination with the Police Officers for enhanced safety.
He said the success of the event would be a milestone achievement to prove Selebi Phikwe’s capability to host large crowds.
Makgosa also emphasised the importance of ongoing support for the Selebi Phikwe Softball Extravaganza initiative, underscoring that its benefits were not only a way to promote health and fitness but also serve as a catalyst for local economic development that would contribute to sustainable empowerment.
The Selebi Phikwe Softball Extravaganza is organised in partnership with SPEDU, the Comets Softball Club, the Selebi Phikwe Town Council and other stakeholders.
The event will be officiated by its patron, the Minister for State President, Moeti Mohwasa. ENDS
