Parliament Rejects 26-day pay model For Teachers

14 Jul 2025

Parliament has rejected a motion seeking to introduce and adopt a 26-day monthly pay model for teachers in public schools, a proposal aimed at recognising the unique and demanding nature of the teaching profession.

The motion, tabled by MP for Maun West, Mr Caterpillar Hikuama, was rejected after 20 MPs voted against it, 10 voted in favour and two abstained.

Mr Hikuama’s motion called for a shift in the current salary structure to a 26-day month pay model for teachers in Botswana public schools as a form of recognition for the peculiarity of their work, in shaping the minds of the next generation, as well as fostering a positive learning environment for learners.

Presenting his motion, Mr Hikuama said teachers in had been overworked, underpaid, and overlooked for far too long.  He said the 26-day pay model would serve not only as a financial adjustment, but also as a morale booster and a symbol of national appreciation for teachers.

“Our educators are burnt out, they work extended hours under immense pressure and with little recognition. This motion is about restoring dignity to the profession and acknowledging the unique service teachers provide to the nation,” he said.

He further said the motion sought to recognise the unique nature and demanding conditions of the teaching profession.  Mr Hikuama argued that the current salary structure did not reflect the heavy workload, extended hours and crucial role that teachers played in shaping the next generation.   He described the 26-day pay model as a necessary step toward fair compensation and boosting morale in the education sector.  “By adopting this, we would be sending a message that we value the educators who carry the future of this country on their shoulders,” he said. Debating the issue, MP for Okavango East, Mr Gabatsholwe Disho called for a broader strategy to improve teacher welfare that included professional development, infrastructure improvements and systemic reforms, rather than focusing solely on salary adjustments.

While the motion failed to gain majority support, some MPs who voted against it acknowledged the importance of improving teachers’ conditions. ENDS
