Act confines water utilities to gazetted areas
10 Jul 2025
Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) is not mandated to provide potable water services to areas, which are deemed ungazetted, Minister of Water and Human Settlement, Mr Onneetse Ramogapi has said.
He said the Act of Parliament 74:02, which established WUC dictates and confines the corporation to areas, which had been gazetted, hence the need for an area to undergo recognition and gazettement before they could be provided with potable water. Mr Ramogapi said that the ministry does not have plans to reticulate water to land and cattle posts.
The minister was answering a question from Lentsweletau/Lephephe MP, Mr Tshenolo Bogatsu who wanted to know whether the ministry would consider providing water to the people of Kgabaneng, near Mmatseta as they currently collected water from the spillage along the North-South Water Carrier pipe line while the puddle where they fetched water from was also a watering point for livestock.
