The Mares goalkeepers ready for battle

26 Jun 2025

The goalkeeping department is the most crucial department in football.

They are the last line of defence and they can also dictate the tempo of the game, at any given time. It is therefore not surprising that the senior women national football team, The Mares has settled for the three tried and tested keepers.

The goalkeepers who are in camp with the team in Casablanca, Morocco for the upcoming TotalEnegies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations are captain, Sedilame Bosija who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns, Lesego Moeng who also plies her trade in South Africa for TS Galaxy and Gaborone United shot stopper, Tlamelo Pheresi.

Goalkeeper coach, Thabo Ntsiapane said in an interview that he had been working with the players to make sure that they were sharp and ready for the competition. He said he was happy with their commitment and hard work during training, given that they knew what was expected of them. Ntsiapane said he was training the goalkeepers in all aspects of the game, including preparing them for penalty shootout.

“Mostly women footballers play long balls, so I am also working on the area of clearing the line of defence,” he said.

By the look of things, he said, they were ready and experienced such that anyone of them could be picked for the big assignment. He further said they would use the international friendly games to give each one of them a chance to see where they should improve before the tournament. Ntsiapane said they would not leave anything to chance, given that they understood the standard of the WAFCON competition.

“As part of our preparation, we hold meetings to talk about our performance during training, and try to do better next time,” he said.  ENDS
