Govt increases internet bandwidth
11 Feb 2014
The government internet bandwidth was increased to 330 Mega Bytes Per Second (MBPS) and 390 MBPS in July 2012 and October 2013 respectively.
Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Nonofo Molefhi told Parliament that after the increase, the performance of the internet improved. He said internet usage was also increasing as more government offices were connected to the Government Data Network.
He said the ministry was consistently monitoring usage to ensure the best internet experience of government employees.
Mr Molefhi said the Department of Information Technology was currently using a checkpoint firewall that was commissioned in June 2012. He said the firewall consisted of hardware and software from the same manufacturer.
He said both hardware and software were the latest in the market, but noted however that a new version of the software was released in December 2013. He said performance of the current firewall met the standards and expectations.
Mr Molefhi was answering a question from Palapye MP, Mr Moiseraele Goya, who had asked the minister whether his ministry had been able to increase the internet bandwidth to 310 MBPS.
He also wanted to know if the procurement of the latest firewall in the market had been done. ENDS
