18 Jun 2025

Moshupa District Council is taking proactive steps to address its strained financial coffers, evident in its recurrent budget of P136 975 690.

With a significant portion allocated to essential utility bills, the council is seeking to bolster its revenue streams beyond the current Revenue Support Grant (RSG) and its own source income.

Council chairperson Mr Peter Sethibe highlighted the urgent need for financial diversification at the opening of a full council meeting on Tuesday

He emphasised the importance of increasing the council’s revenue base through innovative strategies, particularly the adoption of digital payment platforms.

He said the council would also implement payment options, such as USSD services like Orange Money to make it easier for residents seeking to pay for public services.

Mr Sethibe said they planned to promote the importance of paying for services during bi-annual kgotla meetings. Additionally, he proposed profiling and outsourcing public assets to optimise usage and generate income, reinforcing the role of local government in economic development.

Mr Sethibe’s strategic 2025-2027 road map emphasises economic diversification away from single commodities. By tapping into the district’s resource potential.

He outlined plans to invest in tourism development projects, including recreational and cultural initiatives.

The council also aims to encourage community development by exploring the use of local veldt products for initiatives like herbal tea production.

Councillors expressed support for the chairperson’s vision. Kgomokasitwa-Magotlhwane’s Councillor Mr Kabo Ramatsipele called for the exploration of new revenue streams amid economic challenges, while Councillor Ramatsipele lauded collaboration efforts for benchmarking best practices.

Additionally, Lotlhakane West Councillor Benjamin Morokonyane endorsed digital innovation to enhance service delivery and highlighted the need for villages to assess their natural resources for potential revenue generation. ENDS
