Men to tackle societal issues over bonfire

18 Jun 2025

Kgosi Bokamoso Radipitse of Tonota will host men in a bonfire setting at the village’s main kgotla on Wednesday, an initiative aimed at addressing pressing societal issues.

The organiser of the event, Mr Kgomotso Macheng said in an interview that the event, which would target men across all age groups, had been scheduled for  5pm.

He explained that the gathering seeks to confront and discuss the alarming rise in domestic violence, gender-based violence (GBV) and issues of sexual assault against women and the girl child.

Mr Macheng emphasised the importance of the meeting, noting that it comes at a critical time when the issues had created an urgent need for collective action. “It is time for men to step up. We need to engage in open conversations about why men often refrain from attending kgotla meetings, and discuss the potential re-introduction of male regiments or mephato,” said Mr Macheng.

He said Kgosi Radipitse had extended invitation to all men in the village, urging them to participate in this important dialogue aimed at finding solutions.

“When it comes to GBV and related offences, the unfortunate truth is that the majority of perpetrators are men.

“We have a responsibility to address these issues head-on and work toward nation-building and also improve the welfare of the Bakhurutshe community,” Mr Macheng highlighted.

While school-aged boys have not been included in the discussions, Mr Macheng reassured that all male students from Tonota College of Education had however, been invited.

“This is a vital opportunity for men of Tonota to come together, share insights and actively engage in discussions that can lead to meaningful change,” he added.

He appealed all to unite and attend the event in large numbers to take a stand against violence and foster a safer, healthier, community. ENDS
