Mogoditshane-Thamaga district is embarking on a bold and structured Local Economic Development (LED) initiative designed to boost grassroots entrepreneurship and unlock the region’s potential.

Speaking during the Full Council session, the district council chairperson Mr Molatedi Selala announced that training for the LED Technical Team and District Development Committee will begin from July 9th to 11th.

“Our aim is to equip local stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to stimulate the district’s economic growth,” he said.

Mr Selala said the district planned  to conduct a comprehensive economic assessment, value chain mapping, and identify catalytic projects that would anchor sustainable development. A benchmarking trip to Tsabong he said was also on the cards. Mr Selala explained that these efforts aligned with broader goals of reducing unemployment, improving service delivery and leveraging the district’s unique resources across its urban, peri-urban and rural communities.

In the face of budget shortfalls and development delays, he stressed that the district’s focus on locally driven growth came as a strategic move to rebuild the economy from the ground up.

On other news, the council chairperson has revealed that in a bid to improve efficiency and transparency the district council has successfully auctioned off worn-out equipment and vehicles, generating over P840 000 in revenue.

He explained that the auction held on May 31st fetched P744 000 from vehicles and P97 935 from goods.

Mr Selala said the auction was part of the council’s broader strategy to strengthen procurement processes.

“We are committed to building supplier accountability and minimising the need for direct procurement methods caused by supplier failure,” he said.

In addition, Mr Selala said a suppliers Pitso was also held on May 30th to present the Council’s 2025/26 procurement plan.

Local suppliers were briefed on contract performance expectations. He said suppliers were reminded of the importance of timely delivery, communication and proper invoicing.

He said the council emphasised that poor delivery had previously led to contract terminations and service delays.

Nonetheless, the chairperson explained that these engagements were part of the district council’s efforts to rebuild trust, promote transparency and ensure that procurement contributed meaningfully to service delivery in the district. ENDS
