Botswana’s hip hop star, Baanthata Ban-T Mokgwathi, recently launched a youth culture agency, Unmuted267.
Launched this month, Unmuted267 focuses on content creation, experiential events, trend-driven campaigns and cultural storytelling all rooted in what is happening among young people in Botswana.
Using Instagram and TikTok, the platform will serve as a digital magazine for youth culture, spotlighting local creators, events, fashion, music, business and movements.
“It is a first of its kind platform in Botswana, built by Gen Zs for the Gen Zs. At its core, Unmuted267 is about giving the youth a louder, bolder voice whether through content, experiences, or culture-shifting campaigns,” explained Ban-T in an interview.
A young person himself who understands his peers’ needs, Ban-T said the platform was hyper-specific to 18 to 25 year-olds in Botswana, who live online and shaping the culture digitally.
With his wealth of networks and relationships in the industry, Ban-T said the platform was his way of creating opportunities for the next wave of talent, be it through content, exposure or real world experiences.
“Unmuted267 is here to unmute the youth and help them take up space,” said Ban-T.
He said Unmuted267 was a platform that would bridge the gap in the creative space of Botswana, and what better way to be done by another youth.
“I have been that age before, I know what they want, what excites them, what inspires them, and more importantly, what is missing and there has not been a voice for this age group,” Ban–T said adding that Unmuted267 was the mouthpiece, the plug and spotlight for Botswana’s youth.
Ban-T is not only a hip hop artiste, but a diverse creative, having founded events company WhySo Group, which is making strides in the local showbiz space with events such as WhySo Sundays, WhySo and Friends, Farmers Market and WishYouWereHere.Africa. The company has also penetrated South Africa market hosting WhySo Student Nights event in Johannesburg, dedicated to tertiary students. ENDS
