As part of grassroots development of the sport, Botswana Cricket Association (BCA), South East region is hosting a two-day T10 cricket tournament for children under 13 at the Lobatse Sports Complex from Friday until Saturday.
In an interview on Wednesday, BCA South East development officer, Elvis Chipfumbu said the tournament would see boys and girls from six primary schools; Hill Primary, Peleng West Primary, Lesedi la Pela Primary, Crescent Primary, St Theresa Primary and New Look Primary participate in the bat-and-ball sport.
The best players of the tournament, he said would be selected to form part of a team to play against other regions nationally.
Another T10 Tourney goal, he said, was to take children away from the streets and bring them back to the sport field.
“We believe that physical education is an integral part of our children’s education.
Sport instills values such as teamwork, mental and physical strength, unity, competitiveness as well as keeps our children from social ills such as crime and drug and substance abuse,” he said.
Further, Chipfumbu said BCA continued to offer mentorship through coach training programmes to impart cricket skills and techniques to guide and support coaches achieve professional coaching through basic introductory courses, adding that before the tournament they organised two teacher-training courses to prepare them to conduct cricket coaching and be able to guide the children. He said COVID-19 was a major drawback on the cricket sport around the world in varying degrees, as leagues and competitions were cancelled.
The T10 tournament, he said was part of BCA plans of making a comeback.
“Our motto is Bring cricket to the whole nation and we would like to get the kids out of the streets and start playing again,” he said. ENDS
