Young biker makes debut in Liar series

Motorcycle riders often say, “Bikers are not made, they are born.”

At just 15 years, Elang Chibana is proving exactly that by carving her path into the film industry not as an actress, but a stunt double. The young motorsport trailblazer makes her grand debut in the upcoming first African adaptation of the global hit Liar, where she serves as the motorcycle stunt double for lead actress, Motsoaledi Setumo, who features in South African series The Wife, and plays the role of Neo in Liar series produced by Botswana ignite television academy.

In the series’ dramatic trailer, viewers are introduced to Neo riding with intensity through a rugged landscape of hills and wild vegetation. The camera pans wide to capture her cutting across sandy terrain, challenging settings that were navigated by none other than Elang.

Originally created by Two Brothers Pictures for ITV in the UK, this six-part psychological thriller now takes on an African voice, with a cast that includes local talents such as Maxwell Dichi who featured in Muvhango and, impressively, behind the scenes, Elang.

“I was invited to audition by the casting directors, and I accepted. I simply couldn’t miss such an opportunity. I met the requirements hence they called me,” said Elang, explaining how her involvement with the series came to be.

With a strong track record in competitive biking, her selection came as no surprise. From racing at just six years- old, to progressing from the 85cc to the 125cc category by age 12, Elang has also represented Botswana in international competitions in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Small in stature, but her skill level speaks volumes and working alongside Setumo was a highlight for the teen.

“She was so welcoming and kind. Our warm interactions made everything easier,” she said, and added that prayer played a vital role in calming her nerves on set.

“Fear always disappears whenever I pray before riding,” she affirmed.

With a determined spirit, Elang shows no signs of slowing down. When asked what dream stunt role she would love to take on in the future, her answer came quickly.

“If there was ever a remake, it would have to be Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, and I would want to be Drew Barrymore’s stunt double,” she said.

Botswana’s version of Liar is set to premiere on a Pan-African streaming platform, before airing locally on Botswana Television. ENDS
