The Botswana Netball Association (BONA) returned from the elective congress with a renewed sense of purpose and unity, pledging to steer the sport towards stability and growth.
The congress, held in Palapye, marked a significant shift after years of internal disputes and power struggles that had left netball in the country seemingly ungovernable.
In a move to restore confidence and propel the sport forward, BONA affiliates elected Mpopi Motlhagodi as the new president.
The leadership team also includes Loeto Palalani as vice president- events while Onkabetse Kesekang as vice president - technical. The administrative roles are filled by Kgolosesego Kesekang as secretary general and Onica Letshwenyo-Ramocha as treasurer.
The new council further comprises Oganeditse Moduwane as sport development officer and Regent Pitso overseeing marketing and public relations office.
Pitso expressed optimism in an interview, saying that despite most of the committee members being new, their collective experience in various committees across the netball zones wouldlenable them to fulfill their mandates.
“At least four of us have been serving in the four netball zones, therefore we will be able to continue where our colleagues left off,” he stated.
He acknowledged the concerns from stakeholders about ongoing internal conflicts that had hindered the sport’s progress.
“We plan to bring all disgruntled netballers together to work as a team, promote the game, and restore its former glory.”
Pitso emphasised the importance of leveraging the expertise of former netball players and officials to develop grassroots programs. “At the end of the day, netball should thrive,” he said.
Addressing recent challenges, he pointed out that Nigeria’s failure to participate in key competitions had negatively impacted Botswana’s ranking. The new leadership commits to attending all crucial tournaments moving forward, recognising their importance for growth and recognition. Furthermore, he highlighted the absence of a national netball league last year, underscoring the need to revive it along with youth tournaments. ENDS
