Gaborone Bowling Club looks razor sharp to retain the Botswana Bowling Association (BBA) national lawn bowls championship title as the week long tournament gets underway this weekend.
The national finals are played the entire week with the finals set for May 31st. The club that accumulates the most points across all the four disciplines is the champion.
Speaking on the sidelines of intensive preparations for the preliminary rounds of the fours, pairs, trips and singles matches on Tuesday, Gaborone bowls club competitions secretary Kabo Daniel said the team had been sharpening ahead of the closely contested ties ahead.
Daniel said the cumulative points system won them the overall championship title last year in Jwaneng and they were looking forward to defend the hard fought victories.
He said they had bolstered their men and women teams with new and enterprising players in the mold of Prince Manjoma and Anand Rangaswamy in the men’s team while the youthful Peo Ramodise would represent the ladies team.
Daniel said the team had prepared well despite battling with their lawn mainly due to ground maintenance.
BBA competitions secretary Khumo Kebalatetse said the competing clubs at the national championships would select their best players in every discipline, namely pairs, trips and fours.
In the singles discipline for both men and ladies Kebalatetse said qualifiers were started from club level and the top three players for both men and ladies qualified for the national championship singles and the top forth player was selected looking at the best in the all the competing clubs.
