Marathon to stimulate economy - Khama

Multitudes recently thronged Serowe kgotla to witness the launch of Sir Seretse Khama Marathon billed for July 1.
The marathon is major event aimed at celebrating the legacy of the country’s first president, Sir Seretse Khama. The event includes activations and races across the country, featuring 5km, 10km and 21km races
The event, according to Kgosi Khama IV of Ba-Gammagwato who was given the honour to cut the ribbon marking the launch, was an economic initiative that boosted the ambitions of small businesses. He said more efforts should be made to attract participants across the boarder.
Kgosi Khama IV mentioned that the event would also feature a variety of activities, including cultural performances such as singing dancing by different groups from both Botswana and other countries. These cultural activities will also take place at the Serowe Sports Complex where the marathon will conclude.
Tumo Tumo, Chairman of Sir Seretse Khama marathon, urged the nation to take part in the upcoming event, which would bring people together to celebrate the legacy and birthday of the first president.
He added that the marathon also promoted a healthy lifestyle and social wellbeing at all level, which was essential for productivity.
Tumo said participants could select from three marathon categories , with the winner of 21 km receiving P40 000, the 10km winner earning P20 000 and the five km winner taking home P5 000.
He appealed to various companies to assist in the preparation of the event. Tumo said people with disabilities was also welcomed including the elderly and the children.
The chairperson of the Sir Seretse Khama Commemoration committee, Amigo Nthebolang told the gathering that the event will bring peace among Bangwato and therefore some cultural activities would held at the kgotla. ENDS
