Jwaneng Young Stars Battles for Premier League Spot

16 May 2025

With only three matches remaining in the league, Week 20 of the Debswana First Division promises an exciting showdown as second-placed Jwaneng Young Stars take on sixth-placed Tlokweng United.

The crucial encounter is set to unfold on Saturday at Galaxy Stadium in Jwaneng.

Young Stars, currently sitting on 36 points after 19 games and boasting a goal difference of ten, is eager to secure a victory to bolster its chances of promotion to the Premier League next season.

With their rivals, Police XI, holding the top spot with 39 points and a superior goal difference of 23, Young Stars is aware that every match counts in this final stretch of the season.

Kabelo Wakgotla, the PRO for Young Stars, has expressed confidence in the team’s preparations. He pointed out that some skeptics were prematurely assuming Police XI’s automatic qualification, while underestimating what his own team had to offer.

He emphasised that instead of relying on other teams to disrupt Police XI’s momentum, Young Stars was focused on securing maximum points in their final games.

On the other hand, Tlokweng United’s head coach, Pako Seakgosing, conveyed that his team’s preparations had progressed well after their last match, with training resuming on Monda, earlier than usual.

He noted the significance of the upcoming game for Tlokweng United, especially after a long stretch without favorable results, only recently breaking that drought with a win last week. Seakgosing acknowledged that Tlokweng United’s chances of winning the league have dwindled.

Thus, the team’s remaining hope lies in qualifying for the Orange FA Cup next season, contingent on maintaining their position in the Top Eight. Currently, Tlokweng is positioned sixth with 26 points and three matches left to play.

In the structure of this league, teams finishing in the top position from both the northern and southern regions will automatically ascend to the premier league.

The second-placed teams from both regions will face off in home-and-away matches, with aggregate scores determining who advances.

In the northern division, Tsabotlhe FC leads the pack with 34 points after 19 games, closely followed by Santa Green FC, also with 34 points from the same number of matches, differentiated only by goal difference.

As the season approaches its climax, both Jwaneng Young Stars and Tlokweng United have significant stakes in the upcoming match, making it a must-watch for fans and stakeholders alike.  ENDS
