Botswana designers in Durban for Mr Price internship
14 May 2025
Three of Botswana’s emerging fashion designers are in Durban, South Africa to embark on a transformative three-week internship with the Mr Price Group.
The designers; Jacqueline Mmatau, Sphumzile Akolang and Refilwe Elliot secured their spots through their participation in the Fashion Without Borders Botswana (FWBB) event held in Gaborone in October last year.
Speaking in an interview, Fashion Without Borders Botswana co-founder, Serge Kabisoso said the internship was part of the ongoing partnership between Fashion Without Borders Africa (FWB Africa) and the Mr Price creatives with exposure to the global fashion industry.
He further said the internship marked a significant milestone in bridging the gap between raw talent and commercial success. He further said the FWBB was renowned for its vibrant fusion of local and continental talent, fostered cultural exchange and entrepreneurial growth while spotlighting emerging designers.
“This initiative is not just about fashion; it’s about opening doors, creating sustainable career pathways, and positioning African designers on the global stage,” said Kabisoso,
Tebo Kabisoso, another FWBB director, expressed her pride in the designers’ achievements, noting that the opportunity not only highlighted their talent but also placed Botswana on the global fashion map.
Upon their return to Botswana in early June, the designers will be required to submit a comprehensive report on their internship experience and participate in media interviews to share their journey and inspire other aspiring creatives.
During their time at the Mr Price headquarters, the designers will gain hands-on experience in design innovation, fashion production, retail operations, and brand development. The comprehensive mentorship will cover the entire fashion business value chain, equipping the designers with practical skills to thrive in the competitive fashion market.
Mr Price, a strategic partner of FWB Africa for several years, has supported the growth of young designers from Botswana, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo through the internship programme. More than 15 designers have benefited from the initiative, with many going on to establish their brands or join leading fashion houses. ENDS
