Relay teams back home

Botswana’s relay teams, representing the nation at the 2025 World Relays held in Guangzhou, China, returned home yesterday.
The standout of the competition was the men’s 4x400 relay team, comprised Bhekempilo Eppie, Justice Oratile, Kabo Rankgwe, and Leungo Scotch. The team clinched third place with a season-best time of 2:58.27, marking an achievement for Botswana athletics. The members expressed pride in representing the nation and making it to the podium.
“It was an eye-opener and a dream come true to compete for Botswana at the World Relays for the first time,” said a youthful Justice Oratile.
Initially, he said he felt the pressure, Oratile credited the support and motivation from his teammates for helping him thrive.
“I am grateful for the guidance from my teammates, the technical team, and the support from our nation. Given the chance, I would continue to represent our country,” he added.
Leungo Scotch, also a member of the men’s 4x400 team, attributed their success to teamwork, stating that it was his first experience working with them in relay competition.
“I encouraged them to enjoy the race without pressure. Our primary goal was to qualify for the World Championships and reach the finals. I am happy that we achieved our goal, and I extend my gratitude to the technical team and Batswana for their support,” he said.
In the mixed relays, Thabang Monggathipa expressed satisfaction with his performance despite not qualifying for the finals or the World Championships. He said his team has potential to become world-class competitors with support and resources for female teammates.The mixed 4x400 relay finished in sixth position with a season-best time of 3:19.11 during the qualifying heat.
The women’s 4x400 quartet, consisting of Batisane Kennekae, Galefele Moroko, Thomphang Basele, and Golekanye Chikani, finished in last place in heat one with a time of 3:34.62.
The men’s 4x100 relay team, featuring Karabo Mothibi, Larona Mayana, Godiraone Lobatlamang, and Tumo Van Wyk, performed well, finishing third in heat three with a time of 38.53. ENDS
