FNB Premiership reaches epic climax
08 May 2025
The FNB Premiership is hurtling towards its dramatic conclusion, with six teams locked in a desperate scramble for the title.
Forget comfortable leads; this is a nail-biter of epic proportions, where every goal, every point, and every refereeing decision could swing the championship.
Title Contenders
Gaborone United (GU) (57 points, +26 Goal Difference)
The ‘Money Machine’ sits atop the table, but their seemingly comfortable lead is a mirage in this desert of uncertainty.
Their fate hinges on Jwaneng Galaxy. If Galaxy loses all its three remaining games, GU needs to avoid defeat in their own three matches to clinch the title. Any slip-up by GU, however, opens door for challengers.
Jwaneng Galaxy (57 points, +25 Goal Difference)
Sitting level on points with GU, Galaxy are the silent assassins of this title race. Their path is clear: win all three remaining matches and hope for a monumental collapse from GU and TAFIC FC. They possess the momentum and the belief, but their destiny is not in their own hands.
TAFIC FC (55 points, +26 Goal Difference)
The ‘Matjimenyenga Boys’ are the dark horses. They have the same goal difference whilst above Galaxy with one goal difference.
This means a win over NICO United next Tuesday would put them in a powerful position.
If they win all their remaining matches, they would be relying on Township Rollers to do them a favour against the top two contenders. It is a high-stakes gamble, but one they are prepared to take.
Sua Flamingoes (Bafana ba Letswai) (52 points, +27 Goal Difference)
While mathematically still in contention, their chances are minuscule. Sua Flamingoes face a mountain to climb and they need a combination of their own perfect runs and widespread collapses from the teams above them, a highly unlikely chain of events.
Their focus will likely shift to securing a top-four finish and avoiding relegation. Their chances are slim though they have a higher goal difference.
Mochudi Centre Chiefs (50 points and +25 Goal Difference)
‘Maaparankwe’ hopes are heavily reliant on a miracle.
They need to win all their remaining games and hope for widespread losses from the teams above them. Their chances are also very slim.
Township Rollers (49 points, +9 Goal Difference)
The ‘Up the Blues’ are the wildcard. They possess the most intriguing position. While their point tally is higher, their inferior goal difference means a flawless run is not enough.
They require the top five teams to lose all their remaining three games. This scenario is highly improbable.
However, their upcoming matches against GU and Jwaneng Galaxy could significantly impact the title race, potentially paving the way for TAFIC or even themselves, provided a near impossible collapse from the top teams.
The Drama
This is not just about points but also about the pressure-cooker atmosphere surrounding each match. The psychological impact on players and managers would be immense.
A single misplaced pass, a contentious refereeing decision, or a moment of individual brilliance could be the difference between glory and despair.
The final week of the season promises electrifying action, a final showdown of skill and determination.
One thing is certain, the FNB Premiership is far from decided and the fate of the title hangs precariously in the balance as all the teams’ battle for supremacy. ENDS
