Women cricket development vital - BCA

01 May 2025

Africa has a huge responsibility in advancing women cricket across the continent.

Giving closing remarks at the conclusion of the Kalahari Women’s T20 International Tournament in Gaborone yesterday, Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) Vice Chairperson Sumod Damodar called for increased female participation in cricket, emphasising that women should actively contribute to the sport’s development by showcasing their exceptional skill on the field

He said the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) commitment in women’s cricket was intensifying.

Damodar said even though efforts were made to encourage the growth of women cricket in the continent, it was unfortunate that only four countries, out of the 19 that were playing cricket in Africa managed to feature in the second edition of the Kalahari Women’s T20 International Tournament.

Therefore, he applauded the four nations, being the host Botswana, eSwatini, Mozambique and Sierra Leone for their participation and making the tournament a success.

He acknowledged the consistent presence of eSwatini and Mozambique at the T20 tournament saying they had not missed a single tournament since it started 10 years ago.

“That is a sign of commitment, interest and passion to play the game,” he said, adding that although they did not do well in the tournament, their presence was felt.

Damodar said BCA was honoured to host the week-long tournament which was won by Sierra Leone after beating Botswana by 39 runs in the final match. Mozambique finished third after winning their game against eSwatini by 52 runs.

Damodar said BCA would  host ICC division II qualifiers for women cricket in July and said the four teams that participated in the T20 tournament would be joined by four others. He appealed for continuous growth of women participation in cricket saying they had a major role to play.

“Understand what you are doing, grab any given opportunity with both hands and make Africa proud,” he said. ENDS
